I have owned a compaq presario SR1650NX series for aprox. 1 mo. now.
The machine came with the AMD64 bit processor 1 gig memory 256MB graphics card(integrated)and a 250gig HD....This machine seems to have quite a bang for the buck....
I work as a technical designer & graphic artist...so the programs I run are quite intensive. This machine seems to be fairly quick
with graphic and autocadd programs.I have had to do a system restore on it twice already....This I feel was my own fault from overloading the machine to quickly with related programs...not being carefull about system conflicts..If you are carefull how you rip out the junk software
included and build the system up carefully...It proves to be a stable machine.....As you have problably noticed I have used the the word carefull many times...................................................
From reading most of these reports....It kind of sounds like a lot of people are novice users that would jam up anything they would get there
hands on.I have researched Compaqs and found the newer one to be one of the most reliable machines on the market. If you want something cheap and simple.... Buy a Dell to jam up and then see what bad customer support feels like(you ain't seen nuth'in yet till you have delt with("The peoples computer"Techs...) The AMD64 proccesor will Smoke most Pentium 4s..All you really need to do is upgrade the integrated graphics card
(that also means upgrading the power supply) and add 1 more gig of RAM
And you will have a very acceptable machine, that will keep up or blow away P-4s costing a 1000$ more (I am doing this soon)....Well I gotta go...Here's a cheer for AMD...linux...and firefox...People In the KNOW......understand what Im saying.......

I have had almost no problems with Compaq. The only thing that my old computer had was that every so often (oftem times multiple months inbetween times) it would come up with a ScanDisk thing telling me that some of the Sectors were bad. After this happened we noticed that the computer would die off (basically) and we would have to do a complete restart of the hard drive, effectively losing everything we've ever saved. The last straw was that the monitor died on us, so, while out shopping for a new monitor we decided to just buy a new computer. I'm completely happy with our new Compaq (bought at Wal-mart of all places).

I will soon be buying my very own laptop (as the two desktops I've spoken out were the family's) and I plan on buying from Compaq!

Good luck with all your computer needs! :)

I have had a number of compaqs given to me by disgruntled owners. Deskpros, Paresario 5000 series desktops, and a couple of laptops, one a 1255 and the other a 1200. Compaq support people are willing to spend time with you, and will give you all kinds of useless things to try, most of which are a waste of time. I like to tinker with old computers so I don't mind "wasting" my time trying to get them to work. By & large though my efforts are fruitless. I have a number of PC's that I require to actually be useful, that is they need to work. None of them are Compaq. Actually they're all ones that I built myself from parts new and used. Small wonder Compaq now has an almost nonexistant market share. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys!

Compaq Computers have a whole lot of power. They don't have as much Compatibility as HP Computers, but they have more Technology.

I purchased a presario Jan. 2004 after having a great presario back in 1998. I ordered a custom box with all the extras I needed- xp pro, floppy drive, 2nd rom bay, double the memory, beef up the processor, soundblaster, upgraded audio card etc. When I first recieved it, it was completely annoying that it was heavily loaded with spam. Advertisements all over the machine, in the start menu, desktop, and apps that appear to be included with the system that are nothing more than a spam webpage. It took months before all the junk was cleaned up enough to be out of my way (a lot of it is still on my system though). But that's the good news. The bad news is that the floppy drive makes an awfully loud machine-gun-firing type of noise after I've tried using it. It only works intermittently. The CD burner/drive doesn't work. It can recognize some factory produced CD's, but that's it. It doesn't recognize data disks or blank disks. Because it doesn't recognize blank disks, it can't burn disks.

I called their tech support. Initially they were very helpful, and thankfully spoke english and made perfect sense. However, they took me through 2 HOURS of telephone troubleshooting & testing and found no problem with the software or system setup but they were able to realize it WAS failing, just like I'd said. They made no indication that they'd do anything about it. I had to end the call (already had spent more than an hour on the phone than I could afford). The representative told me that the next step is that they'd probably need me to reformat my drive (and still no statement that they'd do anything if I did that). I've got about 20 gig of data from work on this machine and a slew of work graphic programs installed and customized to my preferences. There's no way I'd like to take my system back to it's original settings, with all that original spam setup, have to reinstall everything and put my data at risk, only to prove to them that their $20 CD drive is bad. It looks like the warranty is just words on paper, but they don't have any good intentions other than giving you the run-around. So sorry to see that Compaq has gone the junk quality of HP (another machine I bought that came bad out of the box and their warranty only provided ideas I could TRY that might fix it. The end.)
