Mazdaspeed6 Announced

Mazdaspeed 6

The Mazdaspeed 6 was announced at the Paris Motor Show yesterday. Briefly, the specs for this Summer 2005 release are:

  • 274 HP, 2.3 inline 4 that produces 280 lbs of torque (if they live up to those specs, that’ll be some engine!)
  • Direct-injection, turbocharged engine
  • All-wheel drive (with limited slip differential) comes standard
  • 18″ alloy wheels
  • Thicker stabilizer bars, stiffer spring rates
  • 6 gear manual shifter
  • 40% more rigid frame
  • Restyled front and rear fascias
  • Navigation system option (finally!)

Keep in mind, Mazda has had a recent history of marketing one set of numbers and then coming through with a different set when it comes to horsepower and torque. So realistically I expect those numbers quoted to be about 5-10% less in the actual production model sold in the U.S.

Looks great. Unfortunately, I and the spouse don’t drive stick. And I’m looking at the hatchback as well which there is no Mazdaspeed version. Oh, well.

Of more importance is the NAV system. Reports are still tentative but encouraging. That is, the NAV system may be offered for for all the 6 trims. Yeah!

This is beautiful! So subtle and so mature! Alas, it probaby won’t be available (through the dealer) in Saudi Arabia - even the V6 isn’t sold over here, because the competition would be too stiff with the likes of Camry and Accord V6’s, which are not popular here to begin with (the four-pot models outsell V6s 100 to 1.) I, for one, would buy one for a second car in a heartbeat, and I’d love to get the MPS in Saudi Arabia.

This site is to detail the journey of my purchase of the upcoming 2004 Mazda 6 5-door (or Mazda6 5-door, depending upon how you write it!) sport sedan. The 5-door is also referred to as the Mazda 6 Hatchback (although Mazda doesn't call it this). There is nothing else quite like this on the road, ever since Saab stopped selling the 5-door versions of their sedans and switched over to purely 4-door cars (in 2003). Bummer, because folks like me need the versatility of a 5-door (otherwise known as a hatchback) without making it look like a VW Golf (ew!).
