11,000 Mile Review of the Mazda6 Sedan

Well, it’s been 5 months since I purchased my new 6 sedan back at the very end of February and I’ve travelled mostly 11,000 highway miles. I’ve had two oil changes (one at a local place I trust and another at the local Mazda dealership). I would’ve expected a higher quality level of service from my local Mazda dealership. The oil change and tire rotation cost me $50 from them, and they also reprogrammed the computer as per a service bulletin. It took them over an hour to do these 3 tasks and there was no complimentary car wash or interior vaccum (as the local Saturn dealerships and Jiffy Lube (inside cleaning only) around here will do for free with an oil change).

The wide turning radius is sometimes noticeable, but not enough of a problem to prevent me from buying another. In terms of quality, fit and finish, etc., I haven’t had a single problem with car. I’m amazed, because I would’ve expected just one or two glitches, which I would consider normal and expected. To have not a single one has been a dream.

The car still lacks the low-end torque my old Nissan Maxima had in its V6 guise, which is the only thing I wish it had more of. That and a decent place to put my spare change (the little compartment on the left-hand side of the steering wheel is where it ends up, but it’s hardly convenient or easy to find change in that thing). The car remains tight, no squeaks or rattles, but it has loosened up a bit in terms of being even more fun to drive in its suspension and road grip. It’s just amazing how this car continues to handle!! Mazda sure knows how to build a suspension that rivals anything out of the German House of BMW. If only their engines were tweaked a bit to match….

I’d purchase it again in a heartbeat. It’s been the highlight of the year, easily…

This site is to detail the journey of my purchase of the upcoming 2004 Mazda 6 5-door (or Mazda6 5-door, depending upon how you write it!) sport sedan. The 5-door is also referred to as the Mazda 6 Hatchback (although Mazda doesn't call it this). There is nothing else quite like this on the road, ever since Saab stopped selling the 5-door versions of their sedans and switched over to purely 4-door cars (in 2003). Bummer, because folks like me need the versatility of a 5-door (otherwise known as a hatchback) without making it look like a VW Golf (ew!).
